That’s what a recent study indicates. After analysing 200 years of records of more than 160,000 Icelandic couple’s, scientists finds that couples consisting of third cousins have the highest reproductive success.

The findings have surprised the researchers. Lead author of the study, Kari Stefansson stated “Our assumption was that the more distantly related, the more children a couple would have. But nature has its ways of surprising us.”
