At the outset, let me make clear I am against cruelty to animals.
In the same breath, I find the actions of the PETA meaningless.
The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Thursday protested against slaughtering and serving of chicken at the Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in Chennai City Center at Mylapore. Demanding strict observance of animal welfare norms at KFC outlets across India, PETA activists wore skeleton costumes and held signs that read: "I'd rather be dead than eat KFC."
Let me tell you why I find it meaningless. Protesting before KFC carrying witty banners or in this case wearing costumes is more for grabbing eyeballs to the cause. They help in drawing attention. Beyond that it has no impact.
PETA should conduct such protests before the abattoirs and the slaughterhouses in Chennai. This will help change attitude to animals at the grassroots levels.
However, the owners of these slaughterhouses will not look kindly on PETA protesters. They are more likely to set the goons on them.Whereas at KFC, at best, they will draw curious glances from the patrons.
