An unique competition, the Wife Carrying Competition, which is being conducted for the sixteenth time today, has its origin in a local folklore.

According to the folklore, a brigand called Rosvo-Ronkainen who lived in the 1800's, decried that men can join his army only after proving their worth on a challenging track. It was also common in those days for the victorious army to carry away women from the vanquished villages.

Putting these together, the folklore suggests that this tradition could be the basis of the popular Wife Carrying Competition.
