Does technology strengthen families?

The Pew Internet and American Life Project found internet and mobile phones help families and friends to be better connected to each other than ever before. The respondents to the survey believe technology enhances their communication with their immediate family.

"Family members touch base with each other frequently with their cell phones, and they use those phones to coordinate family life on the fly during their busy lives,"

However, the very same technology that binds them together during their workday separates them during their leisure.

“The Pew Internet team also discovered that families with high technology usage were less likely to eat dinner with other family members, and were less likely to report high levels of satisfaction with their family leisure time than those who used technology less.”

So in essence, technology that bound them when they were apart now separates them when they are together.
