According to him, Federal Judge Jeremy Fogel awarded Facebook $873 million in damages against a spammer who spammed Facebook users with emails offering sex-related products and messages promoting the use of cannabis. The award is reportedly the largest judgment in history for an action brought under Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM) last week.
However, it is unlikely that Facebook will get at the $ 873 million from the spammer and his fictitious company and as Max Kelly admits, the vast sum awarded will act as a deterrent to other spammers.
Facebook is investigating other spam messages like the one offering fake Macy's gift cards that showed up last October.
