Every man needs a shed - Telegraph
For a shed, however dismal, is a place to shelter not just from the rain but from the vicissitudes of daily life.
It is as much a mental as a physical hideaway.
By tradition it is a male preserve, where the man of the house can retreat out of range of predators and tormentors, real or imagined, and can indulge in habits, such as smoking or daydreaming, nowadays regarded as anti-social. In most well-regulated households there is an unspoken understanding that it is out of bounds for women and children. Even where there is no such convention, its customary state of disorder is a powerful deterrent to any who would venture inside.
