Cap tuition fees and increase financial support says new report

A new Institute for Public Policy Research report, "First Class Challenges and opportunities for the UK's university sector" illustrate that a complex system of fees, grants, bursaries and scholarships is thwarting students from poorer backgrounds.

It clearly shows that the current system of financial assistance for poorer students is unsuitable for purpose.

Leading Higher Education experts say increasing the cap on tuition fees will help financially backward students

However, Institute for Public Policy Research argues that for this to be successful, cap on tuition fees coupled with extra financial support for students from lower income households and greater efforts by leading universities to improve the recruitment of students from poorer backgrounds.
