The site 419Eater (a website that concentrates on the Nigerian 419 scam) says that scambaiting is entering into a dialogue with scammers, simply to waste their time and resources.

Scambaiters believe that by engaging these scammers you are keeping them away from potential victims and "screwing around with the minds of deserving thieves".

Another website theScamBaiter.com says that their mission is to "aggravate and humiliate scammers worldwide. While TSB mainly focuses on 419-Advanced Fee Fraud, we also are involved with tormenting other scammers as well- and as many as possible. By wasting these scammers time, it is less time they have to focus on potential victims".

Scambaiting is not a one-way street. Most scambaiters refuse to reveal their identity as some have even received death threats. Some scammers, one believes they are amateurs have also issued empty threats once they realize that they are being jerked.

However, the scammers deserve no pity as they have ruined lives of many unsuspecting victims.
