World's First Shark Sanctuary

  • Palau to ban commercial shark fishing
  • Create Worlds first Shark Sanctuary

Palau is to ban all commercial sharks fishing activities over 600,000 sq km (230,000 sq miles) of ocean it controls thus creating the world's first "shark sanctuary".

The President of the tiny Pacific republic, Johnson Toribiong, will announce the ban during Friday's session of the UN General Assembly and will call for a global ban on shark finning.

A number of developed and developing countries have implemented catch limits and restrictions on shark finning, but Palau is the first to ban commercial shark fishing outright.

Conservationists are so enthused by Palau's initiative that they regard this move as 'game changing'.
